6 Steps For Preparing A Lesson Plan As A Trainer
Nearly every trainer recognizes the value and benefits of well-structured lesson plans, but creating one isn’t easy. So, what do you need to develop efficient training lesson plans?
Before we discuss that let us first understand what a lesson plan is and why it is critical for your training sessions; A lesson plan refers to a detailed step-by-step guide for a trainer to understand what materials to give to trainees and how to provide them so that they would accomplish their learning goals during the course.

1. Write down the objective
If wondering how to write a lesson plan objective, think of a statement that would describe what your students will be able to do after completing your course. It needs to be short, simple, and up to a point. Think of it as a thesis statement: Outline the main ideas you want to cover in your lesson.
2. Write a lesson overview
Outline your lesson: what hook you will use to warm-up the students, what big ideas you’ll cover to explain the topic, etc.
3. Schedule your timeline
Break your lesson plan into sections, depending on how much time you have to cover the topic. Therefore you’ll know where you can speed up or slow down to control the process.
4. Specify Useful Topics and Relevant Concepts
Your training will concentrate on key ideas or skills, but you must explain the concepts to meet your learning objectives. Select your key topics and relevant concepts, then group them to showcase how they are related.
5. Form training materials
Training materials are an essential step in conducting an effective training session plan. There are 2 types of training material categories:

- Training materials for your trainees

When planning learning activities you should consider the types of activities students will need to engage in, in order to develop the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate effective learning in the course. Learning activities should be directly related to the learning objectives of the course, and provide experiences that will enable students to engage in, practice, and gain feedback on specific progress towards those objectives.
As you plan your learning activities, estimate how much time you will spend on each. Build in time for extended explanation or discussion, but also be prepared to move on quickly to different applications or problems, and to identify strategies that check for understanding. Some questions to think about as you design the learning activities you will use are:
- What will I do to explain the topic?
- What will I do to illustrate the topic in a different way?
- How can I engage students in the topic?
