3 Common Questions Asked in Interviews and How To Answer Them

Have you ever found yourself in an interview situation where you were asked a question but couldn’t provide a satisfactory answer because you didn’t know the best way to respond to them?

Yes, it is common especially if you have not invested in interview preparation coaching.

Getting invited to an interview is a dream come true for many, especially with the current job market where getting hired is becoming more difficult by day.

If you have a job interview coming up, it’s important to do a thorough preparation to improve your chances of being hired. From familiarizing with the company’s background, and recent news, and rehearsing common interview questions, it is important to prepare for the interview ahead.

To help you out with the interview preparation, below are 3 common questions to expect and answers you can provide.

1. Tell me About Yourself

The first question you’re very likely to hear is “Tell me about yourself”. This open-ended prompt can feel intimidating but is an opportunity to make a strong first impression.

Keep your answer to around 2 minutes by focusing on the key points the interviewer wants to know – your relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, and career aspirations that align with the role.

Provide a quick overview of your background and highlight 2 or 3 achievements that demonstrate your fit.

For example, you could say “I’ve been in marketing for 5 years and specialize in digital campaigns. Previously I helped a startup increase online sales by 30% through social media promotion. I’m passionate about using new technologies to grow businesses.” Convey enthusiasm while keeping it brief.

2. What are your greatest Strengths

Interviewers want to learn what abilities and traits you would contribute to the team. Have 3 to 5 strengths prepared along with short anecdotes proving each one.

Common go-to strengths include communication, problem-solving, attention to detail, and teamwork. However, try to pick strengths directly tied to the position.

You could respond with “From managing social media projects, I believe my strongest assets are creativity and digital marketing skills. For my last client, I helped launch a successful influencer campaign by brainstorming new approaches. I’m also a strong multi-tasker from juggling multiple campaigns at once.” Emphasize strengths through specific accomplishments or responsibilities.

3. Where do you see Yourself in 5 Years

When faced with this question, demonstrate clear career aspirations linked to the role by painting a picture of your future progression within the company.

Avoid vague goals and focus on realistic milestones you could potentially achieve there such as “In 5 years I hope to have contributed significantly to growing our digital customer base. I’d like to take on more client management responsibilities while expanding my skills in areas like analytics. Long term my goal is to become a subject matter expert in marketing technology solutions.”

Tie your ambitions back to what they’re looking for whether that’s increased responsibility, leadership, or expertise with certain tools.
