How To Answer What Are Your Salary Expectations In An Interview
When you are asked about your salary expectations during a job interview, it might catch you off guard if you are not well-prepared.
The employer usually asks this question to know the minimum salary expectation of the candidate and if it matches their offer..
To tackle this question, be careful to avoid overpricing yourself or going too low because your competency will be questioned.
Before the interview, do your research on what the market pays for similar jobs in your industry and location. Have a range of salaries in mind that you feel appropriately values your skills and experience, but also leaves room for negotiation.
If asked about your expectations, take your time and give a quality response. You could say something like “Based on my research, salaries tend to fall somewhere between X and Y. Does that seem to be in line with your budget?”
By giving a range, you show that you have done your homework without committing to a specific dollar amount right away.
